Being that The One & Only is by no means a comprehensive collection of Duke Ellington's collection (with only 12 songs included, there's no way it even comes close), it's pretty much ludicrous to think that the album would satisfy any collector's desires. All of the songs here are found elsewhere, and because tracks like "The Mooche," "Take the 'A' Train," "East St. Louis Toodle-Oo," and "I Got It Bad (And That Ain't Good)" are excluded, coupled with the lack of liner notes and the fact that "Things Ain't What They Seem to Be" should really be called "Things Ain't What They Used to Be," it's not really a good choice for a beginner, either. And because there are plenty of well-documented Ellington compilations out there that serve either the initiated or the uninformed, there aren't many reasons to spend much time with Legacy's attempt. ~ Marisa Brown, All Music Guide
