Album Review

The Kidz Bop series keeps on keepin' on with Kidz Bop, Vol. 7, another set of soundalikes of hit songs with kids joining in on the choruses. The Kidz Bop-ified cover of Modest Mouse's "Float On" attracted a lot of attention from the hipster/blog set, but -- aside from the fact that before that single, Modest Mouse was one of the least likely bands to appear on any type of pop hits compilation, much less one for kids -- the track (and the rest of Kidz Bop, Vol. 7) is pretty much in keeping with the entire series' slightly surreal feel. The version of "Lose My Breath" is nearly as odd, and oddly exhilarating, as "Float On," while covers of "Pieces of Me," "Let's Get It Started," "Accidentally in Love," and "1985" strike a good balance between being relatively cool and appropriate for kids. Kidz Bop, Vol. 7 is actually one of the better volumes in this series; it has a decent collection of songs, and the odder moments on it are mostly pleasantly surprising instead of questionable. ~ Heather Phares, All Music Guide
