Album Review
The Stanley Brothers' late-'50s to early-'60s output for the King label is the focus of this 18-track compilation from Varese Sarabande. These original recordings feature brothers Ralph and Carter Stanley, with their backup band the Clinch Mountain Boys, incorporating honky tonk, gospel, and even truck driving country into their brand of traditional bluegrass. Among the 18 tracks are "I'm a Man of Constant Sorrow," "Oh, Death," "How Far to Little Rock," and "Don't Cheat in Our Home Town," which later became a number one hit in 1983 for former Clinch Mountain Boy Ricky Skaggs. The Stanley Brothers' Essential Masters is highly recommended for those who want to get familiar with their post-Columbia and -Mercury material. ~ Al Campbell, All Music Guide
