Album Review

The mouthwatering packaging of this first project by an all-star lineup of veteran rockers is almost as tasty as the cool, earthy roots rock music -- but there's a reason behind the food imagery. Namely, that pedal steel guitarist Sneaky Pete Kleinow -- who brings an easy-to-embrace country blues flavor to the mix -- was once a founding member of the legendary Flying Burrito Brothers. That band's classic country-rock sound is the foundation of the new band, which features country artist Carlton Moody (of the Moody Brothers) on lead vocals and guitars, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame keyboardist Garth Hudson (of the Band), bassist Jeff "Stick" Davis (Amazing Rhythm Aces), and drummer Rick Lonow. Aside from the easy-to-digest sound, the band quickly engages in another slice of familiarity with a lively cover of "The Letter," but with clever original lyrics like "Life is a blessing/It's a delicatessen" ("You Got Gold"), who needs covers? The new Burritos explore unabashed declarations of love ("Woman Like You"), the art of simple strumming, Eagles-style (the instrumental "Sister"), a crazy religious childhood (the raucous "Ezekial's Wheel"), and the jumpy, New Orleans flavors of "Zydeco Ball." These guys may be old, gray, and past their individual heydays, but they could keep pace easily with any of the young studs on the modern country chart. Rice and beans on the side, please. ~ Jonathan Widran, All Music Guide
