Album Review
Texture Maps is the third volume in Steve Roach's ongoing Lost Pieces series, collecting together works that have been either been previously unreleased or issued separately from his many album projects. It is a kind of aesthetic clearinghouse for ideas connected to other albums and "states" that needed to be out there, but had no other earthly home. Texture Maps contains only one released cut, an alternate mix of "Bottomless" issued on a compilation on the Hypnos label. The rest are "spaces" created at the time of, or just after, the period surrounding the monumental Magnificent Void and Well of Souls, and the monolithic four-issue project, Mystic Chords & Sacred Spaces. These "spaces" are the articulation of an inquiry into emotional, spiritual, and psychological states that emanate from a space as much as they move toward the fullness of the void. Suffice to say that those who possess the full recordings from these sessions will have their own inquiry and delight deepened because of the added context and exploration found here. This is a necessary item for fans of Roach's speculative material. These missing pieces do not solve the cosmic riddle at the heart of them; they only make the vastness of space more pronounced. ~ Thom Jurek, All Music Guide
