Album Review
Although he is chiefly known for his risqué, double entendre-laden jump blues numbers, Bull Moose Jackson (Benjamin Jackson) also knew how to croon a ballad as well, his tenor sax playing was facile enough to handle swing jazz when he chose to do so, and his frequent, trademark handclaps suggest a gospel revival meeting complete with horns. Proper Introduction to Bull Moose Jackson: Bad Man Jackson is a career overview and has all the essentials from his mid- to late-'40s and early '50s peak, including his biggest hit, the raunchy and blue "Big Ten Inch Record," a couple of entries in his ongoing saga of the rascal Deacon Jones, "I Know Who Threw the Whiskey in the Well" and "Fare Thee Well Deacon Jones, Fare Thee Well," as well as a handful of sides like "Hold Him Joe" and "Bearcat Blues" that feature his jazz side. It adds up to a wonderful introduction to this fun musician, and is roughly comparable to Collectables' equally fine Very Best of Bull Moose Jackson. Either set will give you what you need. ~ Steve Leggett, All Music Guide
