It's hard to believe this is the only
Amen Corner CD in print, given the fact that they scored a remarkable six British hit singles in a short period during the '60s, and that frontman
Andy Fairweather-Low, apart from having a solo career with singles, went on to work with talents like
Eric Clapton. But this was where it all started, in songs like "Gin House," soaked in
blues and
soul, very raw and emotional. It was, perhaps, a better indicator of the heart of the band than its other hits, such as the cover of
American Breed's "Bend Me, Shape Me."
Fairweather-Low's distinctive, occasionally strangled-sounding voice was the band's hallmark, but its musical abilities shouldn't be forgotten. In retrospect, it was a powerful
soul band who adapted its sound, but never lost the essence of what it was, even on something like "(If Paradise Is) Half as Nice." Most people will be coming here for the hits, and they're all here. But there's also something more than nostalgia. There's a very good band, too. ~ Chris Nickson, All Music Guide
