Album Review

Kirk and Sam McGee were among the great brother duos of early country music, with a recorded legacy that stretched back to the mid-1920s. This recording, however, catches them at the end of that long ride, and while Sam still shows the sprightly and eccentric guitar style that made him one of the first real guitar slingers of country music, Kirk had pretty much hung up his fiddle for good at the time these recordings were made in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Originally released on MBA Records, this disc opens with eleven tracks by Kirk McGee, then fourteen tracks by Sam McGee, and ends with three rather anti-climactic tracks by the two of them together. Again, Sam shows little diminishment of his guitar skills on cuts like "Buck Dancer's Choice" and "Knoxville Blues," but Kirk sounds simply exhausted as he sings, and since neither brother had much of a voice to begin with, this is a serious problem. As a historical document of two great musicians near the end of the line, however, this collection has archival value. ~ Steve Leggett, All Music Guide
