Album Review

The Supertones are a New York-based instrumental surf band, veterans of the bars and stages in the N.Y. area for the past decade or so. Although they have released three or four albums, they are predominantly a regional phenomenon, so a tribute album seems a bit premature, but here it is on Golly Gee Records. Supertones Surf features 15 bands covering 15 Supertones instrumentals, then, as an addendum, each band (with the exception of The Mighty Surf Lords) includes an original instrumental as well, making for 29 tracks of fairly traditional approaches to surf music. Highlights include "Fooling Around Playa del Ray" by the Bitch Boys, "Dr. Yes" by the Retroliners, "00 1/2" by the VonRippers, and "The Sweet Ride" by ZPS. Unless you're a total surf nut, this gets somewhat tiring after four or five tracks, since everything here is a variation on a theme. ~ Steve Leggett, All Music Guide
