Album Review
The Coasters ( Carl Gardner, Bobby Nunn, Leon Hughes, and Billy Guy) had several big and enduring hits in the late '50s. Backed by the songwriting and production team of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, they specialized in semi-comic songs that cut across the boundaries between r&b and pop: "Yakety Yak," "Young Blood," "Along Came Jones," "Charlie Brown." Their hits were well recorded and have a sort of timeless quality that continues to give them radio airplay and soundtrack placement, as well as a spot in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. This collection has all their key songs, but is woefully short in length. Unless the budget is tight, there are better and more in-depth compilations of The Coasters available on the market. ~ Steve Leggett, All Music Guide
