Album Review
Formed in 1970, Steeleye Span has had a long career bringing rock dynamics to traditional british folk music, sharing an affinity (and even members) with the similar sounding Fairport Convention. Gaudete is somewhat of a mid-period greatest hits for the band, drawing seven songs from 1975's All Around My Hat and a song or two from subsequent albums up through 1980's Sails of Silver. The title track was a Christmas hit as a single in England in 1974, and several Steeleye Span standards are collected here, including "All Around My Hat," "Thomas the Rhymer," and "Black Jack Davey." ~ Steve Leggett, All Music Guide
