Album Review
This collection of early Waylon Jennings' tunes dates from the late 1950s to the mid-1960s, with Jennings trying his hand at everything from Bob Dylan and Berry Gordy (that's right, there is a pretty cool, radical cover of "Money, That's What I Want" here) to Buddy Holly and Buck Owens, among others. What becomes immediately apparent on one listen is that Jennings wasn't blowing smoke; he was serious about reinterpreting these songs as great songs, and not necessarily making Nash Vegas hits out of them. The arrangements are light years away from the bass and guitar thud of his outlaw country material; instead they are tastefully woven together with light percussion, acoustic guitars, and a steel here and there -- and they're graced with beautiful singing. A budget collection that is worth far more than its' price tag. ~ Thom Jurek, All Music Guide
