Review
Identically titled but only partially similar to a Blue Moon collection covering a portion of the same time period, Past Perfect's Bounce Blues is a budget-priced collection of solid mainstream jazz recordings made over a 12-month period in 1953-1954 by tenor saxophonist Ben Webster, who is heard leading a quartet, a quintet, and a septet, and finally limelighting in front of a string-laden orchestra under the direction of Ralph Burns. Note the presence of trumpeter Sweets Edison, reedmen Benny Carter and Tony Scott, pianists Billy Strayhorn, Teddy Wilson, and Oscar Peterson, guitarists Herb Ellis and Barney Kessel, bassists Oscar Pettiford, Ray Brown, and George Duvivier, and drummers Alvin Stoller, Jo Jones, Louie Bellson, and J.C. Heard. Given Past Perfect's sometimes frankly imperfect or careless selection and/or presentation, this offering of 16 delicious Verve recordings from Webster's early maturity comes as a pleasant surprise. Packed with sanguine passions and insights regarding love, life, and la condition humaine. ~ arwulf arwulf, All Music Guide
