Album Review

The Radio One Recordings brings together the pair of vinyl EPs that Strange Fruit released during the 1980s, to offer up a one-stop survey of Gary Numan and Tubeway Army's BBC session work at the end of the 1970s. That the team only recorded two full sessions seems frightfully remiss -- both the January 1979 set, highlighted by electrifying renditions of "Me I Disconnect from You," "Down in the Park," and "I Nearly Married a Human," and the performance five months later that introduced "Cars," "Airplane," "Films," and "Conversation," find Numan at the top of his game, stripping the already near-naked sonics of his music back to icicle basics -- anyone who heard these sessions being broadcast at the time will certainly remember the sense of sheer desperation and alienation that floated across the ether alongside them. Three previously unreleased tracks complete the package -- superfluous alternate versions of "Down in the Park" and "Me, I Disconnect from You," plus a neat revision of "Metal." They add little beyond body weight to the broadcast cuts, but remind listeners again just how revolutionary Numan once was. ~ Dave Thompson, All Music Guide
