Album Review
The star singer with Stan Kenton's orchestra during 1945-1948, June Christy began her solo career in 1949 after Kenton broke up his orchestra. The music on this CD, 29 concise selections recorded as radio transcriptions, had never been released before, so this is a major addition to the Christy discography. The 23-year-old singer is joined by the great swing pianist Johnny Guarnieri's group, which probably consists of altoist/clarinetist Charlie DiMaggio, trumpeter George Walters, bassist Leo Guarnieri (also heard on violin), and drummer Frank Paristi. Although there are short spots for the horns and the pianist, along with a couple instrumentals, Christy is the main star throughout, sounding quite youthful and enthusiastic on such songs as "I Can't Believe That You're in Love With Me," "Get Happy," "Lullaby in Rhythm," "They Didn't Believe Me," "There's a Small Hotel," and "I'm Glad There Is You." She is certainly recognizable and sounds happy to be performing in the small-group swing setting. This CD is highly recommended to June Christy fans. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
