Album Review
Symphonic enough? Of course it is. Listen to the glisten of the brass. Listen to the shine on those strings. Listen to warmth of the winds. Inch for inch and pound for pound, Fritz Reiner and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's 1956 recording of Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade is the biggest, boldest Scheherazade ever recorded. Although not usually known for his tenderness, Reiner here shapes and molds the Chicago Symphony into a Scheherazade of sumptuous curves and voluptuous dimensions. For some listeners, Reiner's Scheherazade has always been the ultimate in symphonic opulence. For others, it has always been a little too lush, a bit too broad, and a tad too toothsome. The same cannot be said of Reiner and the Chicago's 1960 recording of Stravinsky's Song of the Nightingale. An angular construct of hard strings, cool winds, and tight brass, Reiner here creates a clockwork Nightingale of glinting colors and ticking rhythms. RCA's original "Living Stereo" was the latest and greatest in sound recordings back in the early years of the long player. RCA's remastering on super audio compact disc is a lot louder. Whether that's better is up to the listener. ~ James Leonard, All Music Guide
