In 1938, Prokofiev was approached by Russia's leading film director, Sergei Eisenstein, who proposed a collaboration on the Alexander Nevsky tale. Prokofiev leaped at the chance of working again in a medium he admired. He had already composed the scores for "Lieutenant Kije" and "The Queen of Spades". The resultant film is conceivably the greatest ever devised adn certainly has no equal in the business of partnership between a director and composer.
