Album Review

What Worlds They Bring is a jazz-flavored world music date. While Danny Heines plays guitar, flute, and percussion and contributed all 13 of the originals (most of which are based on folk melodies), the main stars of the first half of the set are actually the vocalists Irina Mikhailova, Yshara, and Tina Malia. Heines also vocalizes (using throat singing) on a couple numbers, while his guitar playing is a major factor in the success of the latter half of the project. The various percussionists (particularly Ty Burhoe on tables and frame drums) are also strong assets to this atmospheric and often-haunting set of Eastern world music. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
