Album Review

The second half of a 1960 concert by the Gerry Mulligan Concert Jazz Band is just as strong as the first, which was simultaneously issued on a separate Trema CD. With Bob Brookmeyer, Conte Candoli and Zoot Sims joining Mulligan as the prominent soloists, the performance builds to a feverish pitch, starting off with a breezy, percolating take of Duke Ellington's recently composed "I'm Gonna Go Fishin'" (written for the soundtrack to the film Anatomy of a Murder), which also contains some exciting tradeoffs between sections of the band. Mulligan's "Bweebida Bobbida" (an imaginative reworking of the chord changes to "I Got Rhythm") demonstrates his adept handling of the ungainly baritone sax. Extended treatments of "Moten Swing" and "Blue Port" also delight the audience. Ben Webster wrote the blues "Go Home" for his recorded meeting with Mulligan the previous year; Sims takes over on tenor sax in this intimate duet with Mulligan, which also features Brookmeyer to good effect. Like all other recordings by the Gerry Mulligan Concert Jazz Band, this CD should be considered an essential acquisition. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide
