Album Review
The Gerry Mulligan Concert Jazz Band marked one of many high points of the baritone saxophonist's long career. This live CD contains the first half of a 1960 concert recorded for radio broadcast by Europe 1 in Paris. Mulligan's all-star ensemble includes valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, trumpeter Conte Candoli, alto saxophonist Gene Quill, and tenor saxophonist Zoot Sims. The leader is the most prominent soloist throughout the concert, though Brookmeyer is prominent with Mulligan in the captivating chart of "Body and Soul." Other highlights include Johnny Mandel's moody "Barbara's Theme" (written for the film I Want to Live and recorded by Mulligan for its soundtrack), and Sims' agile solo in "Apple Core," along with and an unusual 21-minute extended treatment of Mulligan's blues "Spring Is Sprung," with the composer at the piano. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide
