Album Review

Metro's Then and Now: The Best of Fairport Convention collects studio performances from 1982 to 1996 as well as live recordings from that era. These live recordings, taken from the band's annual Cropredy festivals/reunions, feature some of the songs that will be most familiar to casual Fairport Convention fans, such as "Who Knows Where the Time Goes?" and "Meet on the Ledge," as well as a cover of Dylan's "Si Tu Dois Partir." However, the collection does feature a good amount of highlights from the group's later career, such as "The Hiring Fair," "Wat Tyler," "Expletive Delighted," "Red and Gold," and "All Your Beauty," as well as renditions of traditional songs like "The Youngest Daughter." While this probably isn't the best entry point into Fairport Convention's long, tangled career, Then and Now: The Best of Fairport Convention works well as an overview of the group's later years. ~ Heather Phares, All Music Guide
