Album Review

The cuts on Mississippi Mud are drawn from Muddy Waters' earliest sessions for Chicago's Chess Records, and mark the advent of one of the most powerful bands in blues history. With Little Walter on harmonica, Jimmy Rogers on guitar, Leroy Foster on drums (and guitar), and, of course, Muddy himself on guitar and vocals, this incarnation of the Muddy Waters band became the very template on which chicago blues is built. These early sessions have been issued on countless albums, and choosing one over the other becomes a matter of rolling dice, but listeners would probably be best served by sticking with the official MCA/Chess reissues, if only for the annotation they provide. ~ Steve Leggett, All Music Guide
