Album Review
EMI's Gordon Lightfoot Singer Songwriter collection features 14 tunes from his lucrative late-'60s United Artists period. Lightfoot classics like "Rich Man's Spiritual," "Ribbon of Darkness," and the epic "Canadian Railroad Trilogy" spotlight the impeccable playing and cool delivery of this perfectionist folk hero. Lesser-known songs, such as "Home From the Forest" and "Peaceful Waters," are a nice addition, but as an overview of this prolific artist's career, Singer Songwriter is seriously lacking. Fans who are only familiar with the 1975 Gord's Gold compilation, which contained string-laden re-recordings of these earlier hits, will have their interest piqued by these stripped-down original versions. They'd be better off picking up 1993's superb double-disc set The United Artists Collection. ~ James Christopher Monger, All Music Guide
