Album Review
Ernest Tubb is one of the all-time greats -- a Jimmie Rodgers devotee who built upon the style of his idol to forge one of the most instantly recognizable sounds in the history of country music. Despite his towering stature as a pioneer and a hit-maker, Tubb has been poorly represented domestically on CD. This two-disc collection, with 40 original recordings, remedies that oversight by offering the most comprehensive overview available short of investing in Bear Family's series of complete recordings box sets. All but one of these tracks were hits, and duets with the Andrews Sisters, Red Foley, and the Wilburn Brothers add a little variety to Tubb's basic sound. Spanning the years 1941-65, the Definitive Ernest Tubb Hits Collection is a must for serious students of country music, and a generous anthology of major hits for more casual listeners. ~ Greg Adams, All Music Guide
