Album Review
A collection of early period Jazz Messenger sides recorded between 1956 and 1958, this varied set features quintets (and one sextet) anchored by Art Blakey's confident and driving style at the trap kit, a style that put a lot of the "hard" into the notion of hard bop. Among the highlights are a busy and charging take on Hank Mobley's "Hank's Symphony" and a muted (for Blakey, anyway) version of the "I Remember Clifford" ballad. ~ Steve Leggett, All Music Guide
