Album Review
With most veteran rock artists, a single-disc overview just doesn't cut it -- far too many stones are left unturned. And Lou Reed fits this description to a tee -- with 20 studio albums as of 2004 (and that's, of course, not counting his work with the Velvet Underground or his live sets), good luck trying to assemble a single disc that doesn't leave out several classics. Hence, the double-disc Wild Side: Best of Lou Reed. which fits the bill much better with 31-tracks total. Although it doesn't touch upon Reed's late-'90s albums (and the track listing is haphazardly thrown together -- it's not in chronological order), all the expected classics are here, as well as key album cuts. Standouts include such Velvet Underground-era compositions as "I'm Waiting for the Man" and "Sweet Jane," the glam classics "Vicious" and "Walk on the Wild Side," the ballads "Perfect Day" and "Coney Island Baby," Reed's darker side -- "Heroin," "Kill Your Sons," and "How Do You Think It Feels," plus "Street Hassle," a track that defies categorization altogether. One day, a compilation will appear that touches upon all phases of Reed's career, but until then, Wild Side: Best of Lou Reed doesn't do too badly. ~ Greg Prato, All Music Guide
