Album Review
Little Richard recorded for the Vee-Jay label in the early '60s, after his historic stint with Specialty Records and the restored rock & roll vigor that followed his sudden religious conversion. While at Vee-Jay, Richard re-recorded some of his classic mid-'50s tracks (in this case "Rip It Up," "Jenny Jenny," "The Girl Can't Help It," "Tutti Frutti," and "Good Golly Miss Molly"), trying to recapture the natural initial hysteria. While a toned-down Little Richard is still worth hearing, the record-buying public was duped into believing these Vee-Jay sides were the original Specialty versions, only to be greatly disappointed after getting the record home. While Richard's wild whoops and furious piano still come through, especially on the neglected newer material, it goes without saying that the Vee-Jay reissues should only be investigated after obtaining the Specialty sides. ~ Al Campbell, All Music Guide
