Album Review

Prior to the Scorpions' monstrous success packing stadiums around the world during the '80s heavy metal heyday, a decade earlier they released a string of excellent hard rock albums that secretly helped shape the entire genre. In Trance/Virgin Killer is a limited-edition, leather-bound book containing both albums on two remastered discs, with 1974's Fly to the Rainbow dispersed as bonus tracks. Making this package even more attractive are extensive liner notes that contain an early band biography, complete lyrics, rare photos, as well as original album cover artwork previously banned in the United States. The sound throughout is crisp, clear, melodic, and heavy, and makes obvious the influence these albums had on many bands. It would seem unlikely that a young Eddie Van Halen never heard the opening scorcher "Dark Lady" before crafting his legendary instrumental "Eruption." For fans looking to upgrade their collections or the curious exploring the Scorpions' rich roots, In Trance/Virgin Killer is essential. ~ Craig Curtice, All Music Guide
