Album Review

The details surrounding this single-disc compilation make it a rather fascinating listen. Years ago, the person formerly known as Cat Stevens (now Yusef Islam, but born Steven Giorgiou) renounced his work as a pop singer and even sold all his instruments. But at the close of the century, he had something of a change of heart, giving his approval for this retrospective. So, in effect, this disc is the consideration of a past life by someone who is still living -- a strange thing indeed. In this context, it reveals much about the persons Stevens, Islam, and Georgiou, particularly because there seems to have been a lot of love invested in the project. Rather than go in chronological order, the disc offers scattered snapshots from a fine career, both as Brit-pop wunderkind ("Here Comes My Baby") and folk-rock superstar ("Moonshadow"). Die-hard fans will surely have most of these songs, but it's an excellent way to pick up essential tracks, as well as songs from the film Harold and Maude that only appeared on a previous (and inferior) best-of set. But, above all, it's a fine testament to an excellent songwriter. ~ Tim Sheridan, All Music Guide
