Picking up where the previous volume left off, The Metallic-Era, Vol. 2 collects even more original versions of songs that
Metallica has covered over the years. What makes the second volume of this series different from the first is that it includes several non-metal tracks, such as
Lynyrd Skynyrd's heartbroken ballad "Tuesday's Gone,"
Blue Öyster Cult's
space rock epic "Astronomy," and
Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds' "Loverman." But don't fret, metalheads, the majority of the track listing is once more comprised mostly of obscurities from
new wave of british heavy metal artists. Tops include two tracks each from a pair of thrash metal pioneers,
Motörhead ("Overkill" and "Too Late Too Late") and
Mercyful Fate ("Evil" and "Curse of the Pharaohs"), plus tracks from the band
Metallica has covered the most,
Diamond Head ("It's Electric"), and such ultra-obscure groups as
Holocaust,
Jaguar, and
Savage. To trace where
Metallica formed their original and influential sound, be sure to check out The Metallic-Era, Vol. 1 and The Metallic-Era, Vol. 2. ~ Greg Prato, All Music Guide
