Album Review

This is the second volume in the Masters of Jazz series of Joe Turner's early recordings (in a proposed six-volume collection). These sides, cut for Decca, were all recorded in nine months. Turner, with Pete Johnson and others, was still developing his blues touch, but was nonetheless in serious command of his powers and was big on the Harlem scene of the time as well as New York's jazz and blues scenes in general. Some of these sides have dodgy sound, but most are better than acceptable. While most listeners will primarily be interested in his 1950s recordings, this material is nothing to sneeze at and should be listened to and evaluated in its own right, as Turner was bringing the deep blues into tunes by Duke Ellington and Count Basie, among others. Solid from top to bottom. ~ Thom Jurek, All Music Guide
