Album Review

This 1997 CD features June Christy singing with Stan Kenton's Orchestra over a 27-year period, although with the exception of the final number (a poorly recorded "Remind Me" from 1972), the set sticks to the years 1945-60. Most of the material was previously unreleased, except for three V-Disc performances and three numbers cut for Armed Forces radio in 1960 that had been put out by collector's labels. Unfortunately, the personnel is not given for any of the selections, but the focus throughout is primarily on the singer anyway. Christy is in fine form; in addition to the three dates mentioned, she is heard at the Hollywood Bowl in 1948, singing seven complex charts from 1950 with the Innovations String Orchestra, and making guest appearances with Kenton in 1953, 1954 and 1959. Among the highlights are "Ride On," "Lonely Woman," "Lonesome Road," "Something Cool" (a rare version with the Kenton Orchestra), "Whee, Baby," and "Easy Street." Highly recommended to June Christy fans. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
