Album Review

A handy little 32-minute, 10-song compilation, derived from Whiteman's two and a half years on Columbia (1928-30), when he began allowing more jazz elements into his work. The featured vocals include Jack Fulton ("Body and Soul," "Sweet Sue, Just You"), Skin Young ("Felix the Cat"), Bing Crosby ("'Taint So, Honey, 'Taint So," "Get Out and Get Under the Moon"), and the Rhythm Boys (with Bing Crosby) ("That's My Weakness Now"). The selection is a bright, bouncy set of dance tunes, all amazingly dexterous, especially in the singing, and the quality and condition of the masters is astonishingly good for a budget collection of this kind, all very clean with lots of depth and brightness. The playing isn't bad, either, within the limits of the dance and novelty field -- check out the solos on "That's My Weakness Now." And none of it overlaps with any other Whiteman collection. ~ Bruce Eder, All Music Guide
