Review
The first of two CDs recorded during a 1957 concert in Miami by Woody Herman is a bit of mixed bag. Though Herman's band swings mightily, the performance was recorded with just one microphone, so the balance between instruments is inconsistent at times and the soloists are often not clearly audible. But the brass and reed sections are always distinct in the ensemble passages of band favorites like "Woodchopper's Ball" and "Apple Honey," though the set includes newer material such as Horace Silver's "Opus de Funk" and Manny Albam's "Captain Ahab." The solos by trombonist Bill Harris, who had returned to the band the previous year, and newcomer Victor Feldman on vibes are among the highlights, though none of the remaining personnel, aside from the leader, is identified. This is a good, though hardly essential, recording by Woody Herman. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide
