Album Review

Unlike some of the other contributors to the V-Disc program, for the most part Hoagy Carmichael did not require an orchestra to back him, contenting himself with a piano accompaniment to his self-described "shaggy dog" voice. This leaves plenty of room for his individual interpretations of his own highly individual songs and makes for more sonic clarity than is typical in this series of "unaltered" acetates. Carmichael sometimes introduces the songs, giving insight into his work at the movie studios. The result is a delightfully intimate performance that emphasizes Carmichael's charm and the quality of his songwriting. Selections include "Stardust" (as an instrumental, the way it was originally written), "Two Sleepy People," "Baltimore Oriole," and "Hong Kong Blues," but some of the lesser-known numbers are just as enjoyable. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide
