Album Review
Featuring some of the best bebop on wax, this Dexter Gordon roundup takes in many of the tenor great's key sides from the mid-'40s. The 23-track set includes several of his classic Savoy cuts ("Long Tall Dexter," "Dexter Digs In"), as well as some choice work from dates with Billy Eckstine ("Blowing the Blues Away") and Dizzy Gillespie ("Groovin' High"). Throughout, Gordon shows why he led the charge for bop tenor players with a fine array of substantial yet lithe solos. There are a good number of alternate takes to contend with here, so newcomers beware. ~ Stephen Cook, All Music Guide
