Album Review

This is another in a long line of Stooges-related "official bootlegs." "Head On" is a fascinating two-CD set that features some studio outtakes, rehearsals, and live performances of mainly unofficially released tracks and rarities. The sound quality is never good (actually, most of the material on the second CD is of very poor quality), but this set shows how great a band the late-era Stooges were, with James Williamson on guitar and Scott Thurston on keyboards. Highlights include searing rehearsal performances of "Johanna" and "Open Up and Bleed." Drawbacks include shoddy recordings of potentially strong cuts like "Wet My Bed" and "I Got Nothing." This set is strictly for Stooges fans only. ~ Brian Flota, All Music Guide
