Album Review
These 14 songs were recorded in 1963 and 1964; material from these sessions appeared briefly on Canada's Rebel label, as well as Piedmont. The mood is late-night informal, although there's little, if anything, in the Hurt catalog that could not be called informal. Hurt's originals are dotted with standards like "C.C. Rider," "Do Lord Remember Me," "Casey Jones," and a seven-minute "Stack-O-Lee." It's not as forceful, perhaps, as his best-known recordings, and some of the songs are duplicated on other releases, but the sound quality (despite the destruction of the master tape) is OK, and Hurt fans will almost certainly find it to their liking. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide
