Album Review

For collectors only, Country Hoedown Shows & Films contains 25 tracks drawn from radio transcriptions, soundies, and films. Although the outside packaging doesn't say so, several songs are solo performances by artists such as Ernest Tubb and Tex Williams, and some are ensemble vocal pieces or duets with Carolina Cotton, Judy Hayden, and others. The sound quality and performances on the transcriptions are good; the film tracks are very rough. On the transcriptions Merle Travis sometimes changed the arrangements or tempos of his well-known songs quite a bit, and performed some songs ("Midnight Special") that he did not record in the studio at the time. ~ Greg Adams, All Music Guide
