Album Review
Produced and arranged by Gene Barge, the Soul Stirrers' Sing is an excellent welcomed addition to the venerable group's catalog. The mellow "Keep Love Alive" has a message of unity that no one can argue with. Sam Cooke's "Jesus Be a Fence," one of the group's perennial favorites, is covered with rousing fervor. Martin Jacox's raspy vocals on "Calling On the Lord" and "Poor Man's Struggle elicit the earth-shaking intensity of a Spirit-filled tent revival. Two Stevie Wonder songs, "Have aA Talk With God" and "Love's in Need of Love Today," with a smooth lead vocal by Willie Rogers, are given appropriate covers that imbue the lyrics with a new depth. Other standouts are "You Better Sing" and a fresh arrangement of the standard "Last Mile of the Way," with the Gatling Staff Choir. With such classic singers as R.H. Harris, Sam Cooke, and Johnnie Taylor having left their indelible mark as past members, the group admirably stands on its own. ~ Ed Hogan, All Music Guide
