Album Review
Jacques Dutronc is a true oddball, making goofy, simplistic french pop one moment only to turn around and craft dark spoken-word dirges moments later. His voice, a mix of crafty cynicism and clear-throated innocence, is a wonderful contradiction that drives even his most daft music quite strongly. Give or take the pop tracks -- they are mostly throwaway songs that showcase his wicked humor, but the darker songs are quite interesting. Utilizing goth guitars and a creepy singing persona, these songs are bizarre snippets from a complicated mind, and the listener can appreciate the rest of the material much more knowing the murky depths lying beneath the singer's croon. Many music fans will find themselves confounded by the tracks here, but anyone looking for an adventurous listen will find music that sounds like it was recorded on Mars in the late '70s, and a higher compliment couldn't be paid to the material. ~ Bradley Torreano, All Music Guide
