Album Review
A more accurate title would be "The Best of Recent British Folk Rock," since, of the 18 tracks included on this 73+-minute disc, 14 date from 1992-96. That's not to say that many of the performers don't date from well before the '90s, however: among the nine groups represented are such familiar names as Steeleye Span, the Strawbs, Fairport Convention, Pentangle, and Lindisfarne. Compiler John Dagnell has mostly opted for stirring, uptempo selections, often with politically charged lyrics, though the songs range from traditional tunes like Steeleye Span's newly recorded "The Golden Vanity" to the Clannad/ Enya style of Capercaillie's original "Waiting for the Wheel to Turn." The album demonstrates that British folk-rock is alive and well, both as performed by its most memorable veterans and by some promising newcomers. Just don't buy the album expecting vintage recordings. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide
