Album Review

This is the definitive Hoagy Carmichael CD, documenting his most significant recordings of the 1927-1934 period when he evolved from a little-known jazz pianist/vocalist to being widely recognized as a major composer. The 21-song CD starts and ends with previously unreleased solo versions of "Stardust" featuring Carmichael in 1960. Also on the release is Hoagy's recording of his "Washboard Blues" with Paul Whiteman's Orchestra, "So Tired" with Jean Goldkette, dates led by Carmichael (including four songs in 1930 that have solos from cornetist Bix Beiderbecke), a guest spot singing "Come Easy, Go Easy Love" with Sunny Clapp's Band O'Sunshine, and five solo piano/vocal numbers from 1933-1934 (including "Stardust"). Highly recommended. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
