Album Review

Jenny McCarthy, when it comes right down to it, is an odd star: A working-class girl from Chicago, who first earned attention when she became a Playboy Playmate in 1993. She eventually became Playmate of the Year in 1994, which led to a job as the hostess of MTV's dating game, Singled Out. None of which, of course, makes her an expert on surf music, so it is a bit of surprise that this various-artists collection is presented as her own personal favorites. No, Jenny McCarthy's Surfin' Safari is simply an oldies collection with a beautiful celebrity in a polka-dot bikini on the cover. And it isn't surprising that Jenny McCarthy's Surfin' Safari plays it safe with a predictable cross-section of surf-rock classics. Hell, it isn't just predictable -- the bulk of this album is drawn straight from the Pulp Fiction soundtrack, while the rest features oldies favorites like "Surfin' Safari," "Surfin' USA," "Pipeline," "Wipe Out," "Tequila," "Surf City," and "Surfin' Bird." Which means, this really isn't an album designed for collectors, it's one for casual fans. And, truth be told, Jenny McCarthy's Surfin' Safari does an excellent job of distilling most of the genre's classics onto one disc -- it really is a fun listen. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
