Album Review

Definitive Collection is an import hits package that collects some of Heart's essential recordings from the group's pre-1985 comeback era. However, this collection can hardly be called definitive because it misses some of Heart's most famous singles from the era, including "Crazy on You," "Magic Man," "Heartless," and "Dreamboat Annie." The hits it does include are "Barracuda," "Little Queen," "Straight On," "Even It Up," "Dog and Butterfly," "How Can I Refuse," "This Man Is Mine," and "Tell It Like It Is." However, a couple of tracks appear here that do not appear on any of their recent hit collections, among those being the power ballad "Allies," which brings to mind later hits such as "What About Love" and "Alone," and other tracks such as the bluesy "Johnny Moon," "Perfect Stranger," "Sweet Darlin'," "Dream of the Archer," "Cry to Me," and "Lighter Touch." To be sure, the music is great, but the omissions of "Magic Man," "Crazy on You," and other key tracks keep this collection from even coming close to being definitive. ~ Jose F.
