Album Review

Among a slew of surf music compilations, this GNP collection might be one of the best. While certainly not as packed as other releases, Bustin' Surfboards does spotlight the music from its late-'50s beginnings to the latest retro surf sounds and features both high-profile hits like The Marketts' "Out of Limits" and more obscure material such as The Gamblers' "Moon Dawg." In between, there are choice cuts by The Beach Boys, Dick, The Challengers, and The Lively Ones, not to mention surf-friendly fare by Richie Valens and Bobby Fuller. The mix roams from Jim Messina (of later Loggins and Messina fame) and The Jesters' relatively straight surf rocker "Yang Bu" to the Surf Raiders' Spanish-tinged "The Curl Rider" and Jack Nitzsche's Spector-esque bit of surf existentialism "The Lonely Surfer" (Nitzsche, of course, worked extensively with Spector in the first half of the '60s as a studio jack of all trades). Whether a novice or die-hard fan, these 14 gems will not disappoint. ~ Stephen Cook, All Music Guide
