Review

Ben Webster is captured here on one of his many New York club dates from the first half of the '50s. Backed by the first incarnation of The Modern Jazz Quartet -- pianist John Lewis, vibraphonist Milt Jackson, bassist Percy Heath, and drummer Kenny Clarke -- Webster lights up the Birdland audience with his usual mix of vaporous ballads and bluesy swingers. And while the sound is bit muddied and scratchy, all the players are in fine form throughout. Webster, of course, takes center stage, sounding particularly lucid on "You Are Too Beautiful" and Charlie Parker's bop classic "Billie's Bounce." Further displaying his knack for the new jazz terrain of the day, the swing-era tenor great also takes an impressive stab at Bird's "Confirmation." With crowd noise readily audible but generally unobtrusive, this live recording should suit listeners keen to hear the saxophone master at work in his after-hours element. ~ Stephen Cook, All Music Guide
