Album Review

Time-Life's Sounds of the Seventies: 1977 completely ignores punk, new wave, and disco (except for the Bee Gees' version of it), gives hard rock and soul only a glance, and yet remains a compelling and entertaining listen. It focuses mainly on soft rock and pop, rounding up wonderful songs like the Atlanta Rhythm Section's "So in to You," Al Stewart's "Year of the Cat," Hall & Oates' "Rich Girl," Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams," and Steve Miller's "Fly Like an Eagle." For some reason, however, the compilers decided to include multiple songs by artists (the Bee Gees, Foreigner, and Linda Ronstadt) instead of searching out songs by other artists that would have helped give a more complete and diverse picture of the year. Because of this and the glaring omissions, it is hard to think of the disc as definitive in any way, and despite the high quality of the tracks, it's one of the weaker entries in the otherwise excellent series. ~ Tim Sendra, All Music Guide
