Review
This ASV disc is tailor-made for Webster fans who started out on his popular Verve sides but want a chance to sample the early highlights. Covering the tenor great's 1931-1944 stretch over the course of 24 tracks, Best of Ben Webster takes in several of his crucial sides with Bennie Moten and Duke Ellington ("Cottontail," "All Too Soon"). In addition, the collection contains numbers featuring Count Basie, Billie Holiday, and various top-notch combos. And making matters only better, the beyond-belief collective lineup also includes Benny Goodman, Jimmy Rushing, Henry "Red" Allen, Coleman Hawkins, Roy Eldridge, and Hot Lips Page, among many others. A fine entrée, indeed. ~ Stephen Cook, All Music Guide
