Album Review

Jewel's debut album is a charming collection of light alternative folk-rock from the teenage singer/songwriter. Her songs are occasionally naive, but her melodies can usually save her lyrics. ~ Sara Sytsma, All Music Guide

I bought this originally in 1997 and fell in love with it. My favorite tracks on the album have changed, but the constant is that I've never liked the song "Painters". Over time, after listening to my first copy so many times, the disc got so scratched that it wouldn't play. SwapaCD helped me replace my old copy and bring back so many happy memories.

I was sad that Jewel changed her style after this album, but her deep, husky, sensual vocals have always kept my attention on this cd; they keep me coming back for more. Certainly some very intense lyrics, some of which presented in a light tone ("I'm Sensitive"). I put her in the "angsty chick" musicians category that rocked the mid to late 90s, who helped me fall in love with music, such as Paula Cole and Alanis Morissette.

Excellent CD. Showcases raw talent. Unpolished and simple, but that's what makes it great.

I have owned this CD since it was released several years ago. This is an excellent example of how powerful a minimalistic style of music can be. Jewel's debut CD ranks up there with the works of Tori Amos and Sarah McLachlan's,matching their drive and angst that allows them to create music that is a pure art form. -Rae Atkinson (Amazon.com)

Can't believe this CD did so well. What weird songs. And "Daddy" has to be the sickest thing I've ever heard.

This is a great CD. She is so poignant and heartfelt that every lyric says something to you.
